About Us
A vision becomes real in providing fun for the entire family!
The Maryland Marvels franchise began with a vision of delivering sports entertainment to the communities of Maryland, DC and Virginia. The vision soon became an unyielding mission and currently, the Maryland Marvels offers local basketball shows that bring family-fun, sports entertainment events with contests, give-a-ways and halftime performances of local artists-- all under one roof!
With the support of the ABA, State of Maryland, and the sponsors, advertisers and businesses, the Maryland Marvels provides many opportunities to local artists and businesses to participate in.
Each game is a super spectacular, bonus filled extravaganza of unique fun that treats both the players and audiences to an unforgettable experience and feel of big league basketball. This, in turn, adds credence and strength to the motto of the ABA: It's more than just a game, it's an experience.
About the American Basketball Association (ABA)
The American Basketball Association (ABA) is a professional league that prides itself as having major style while being competitive. For nine seasons (1967 -1976), the league entertained fans with players that had colorful names, showcasing cool moves, fashionable (sometimes ridiculous so) clothes, with that patriotic red, white and blue basketball. Many NBA stars first played in the ABA - Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Connie Hawkins, Artis Gilmore, George Gervin and Dan Issel, to name a few.
Other ABA stars were: Rick Barry, Spencer Haywood, Bobby Jones, Maurice Lucas,Billy Cunningham and Steve Jones. A few high caliber coaches that came out of the ABA were Larry Brown, Hubie Brown, K.C. Jones, Lou Carnesecca, Al Bianchi and Doug Moe.
The ABA brought cool nicknames such as Bad News, Slick, The Iceman, Fatty, and who can forget the world famous, Dr. J. In 1976, the ABA merged with the NBA, with the absorption of the best ABA teams - the San Antonio Spurs, New York Nets, Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers. The rest of the ABA was shut down for good.
The ABA games were wilder. Tons of running, fast breaks everywhere, high flying dunks, and sharpshooting jump shots. The ABA was the first to introduce the 3-point basket. The 3-point line tended to force defenders to step out and guard respectable outside shooters, opening up the lane fordrives. The current ABA continues to shape the way we view basketball by creating new and fun ways to play the game.We are excited to be part of the ABA and strongly believe you will to.
